The Consulate of São Tomé and Príncipe extends its deepest condolences to all family members for the recent passing away of the ex - President of São Tomé and Príncipe Evaristo Carvalho, who died on 28 May 2022, aged 80, in Lisbon.
Father of 21 children, Evaristo do Espirito Santo Carvalho was a São Toméan politician, President from 3 September 2016 to 2 October 2021, as well as Prime Minister for two terms (7 July - 25 October 1994, 26 September 2001 - 28 March 2002).
The funeral was held on 4 June 2022 at the Basilica da Estrela from 11:00 a.m. (STP local time) until early afternoon, at which time the burial of the former Head of State took place in the Santana cemetery.
In response to this event, the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe declared five days of national mourning, as a tribute in honour of Evaristo Carvalho, from 5 June 2022 until 9 June 2022.
